Beagle Brigade

Even though I hate cops, everyone has to admire the work of the Beagle Brigade.

Beagle Brigade is a team of beagles and their human handlers who, as part of the United States Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), inspect luggage at U.S. airports searching for agricultural products. According to the USDA, the Beagle Brigade program averages around 75,000 seizures of prohibited agricultural products a year.

Unauthorized meat, animal byproducts, fruit and vegetables can carry diseases and pests that have the potential to infect U.S. agriculture. For example, foot-and-mouth disease could be introduced into the U.S. via contaminated meat products brought into the country by a traveller. The APHIS works in conjunction with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the United States Public Health Service at entry points to the U.S., including land borders, ports and airports. The Beagle Brigade generally works in the baggage-claim area at international airports.

Originally bred for rabbit hunting, the beagle has an acute sense of smell; they can detect smells that are too faint to be sensed by scientific equipment. In addition, they have a voracious and undiscerning appetite. These traits compensate for their self-willed, somewhat stubborn temperament, which makes them difficult to train. Beagles are generally friendly and gentle with people, and, due to the their small size, are not intimidating. For these reasons, beagles were chosen as the breed to be used for these APHIS airport inspections.

The APHIS airport inspection program was begun in 1984 at Los Angeles International Airport. In 2004, there were more than 60 Beagle Brigade teams at 21 international airports. The canine members of the Beagle Brigade have either been donated by private owners and breeders, or rescued from animal shelters. The dogs are evaluated for appropriateness, such as friendliness and intelligence. Those beagles that are not selected for the program are placed in adoptive homes. None are returned to animal shelters.

Beagles have the ability to categorize smells. Therefore, they can distinguish between smells emanating from "restricted" items (such as fruit, vegetables, and meat) and non-restricted items. When a member of the Beagle Brigade smells a restricted scent, it sits down next to the luggage to alert its handler, who then talks to the owner, and, if necessary, performs a search. Experienced beagles have a 90% success rate, and can recognize almost 50 distinct smells.

A beagle's career with the Beagle Brigade usually lasts between six and ten years. When they retire, they are usually adopted by their handlers (handlers and dogs are paired throughout the beagle's career). Otherwise, they are placed in adoptive homes.

The USDA National Detector Dog Training Center in Orlando, Florida, receives beagles donated by private owners, breeders, and animal shelters.

Beagle Wins Best In Show!!!

Uno the Beagle makes history with Best in Show win at Westminster
(For the full USA Today article click here.)

NEW YORK — Uno the underdog beagle first captured the hearts of the crowd
at the 132nd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show and then he won the affection
of the judge, becoming the first beagle to win Best in Show Tuesday night.
He's Numero Uno now.

"He's the most perfect beagle I've ever seen," said judge J. Donald Jones.
"The standard of perfection for the beagle is very clear. It describes him."

"If you saw him go around the ring, you saw a perfectly smooth locomotion,"
Jones said. "Not one muscle went the wrong way. … And look at his face,
you just melt right down."

Uno defeated a toy poodle named Vikki, the nation's No. 1 dog last year,
a Sealyham terrier named Charmin, a standard poodle named Remy, an
Australian shepherd named Deuce, a Weimaraner named Marge, and an akita
named Macey, the No. 2 dog last year.

Expect Uno to be one of the most popular Westminster winners, says the
longtime TV host of Westminster, David Frei, given that a beagle is an
all-American dog and one of the most popular breeds in the country.

"He's the people's dog," handler Aaron Wilkerson said. "He's exactly
what a beagle is supposed to be, a merry little hound." Besides,
he's awfully cute.

With dreamy brown eyes and a continually wagging tail, Uno was clearly
a crowd pleaser at Madison Square Garden. Even during quiet moments,
fans shouted "Uno!" as if this was a football game and not a dog show
full of tuxedoed and sequined fans. When Jones picked Uno, the crowd
gave him a standing ovation.

But he's more than just a pretty face and a fan favorite. He's also one
accomplished hound. Almost three, Uno, who is officially named K-Run's
Park Me in First, was the No. 6 ranked dog in the country and ended last
year as the No. 1 beagle and No. 1 hound. He won the hound group at
the prestigious AKC/Eukanuba national championship in December.

When Wilkerson, who lives with Uno in Columbia, S.C., was asked in the
news conference about Uno's personality, Uno woofed as if on cue. He
also grabbed a hold of a fuzzy microphone boom on the end of a TV camera
a few times as if it was his favorite duck toy. Of course, he barked
throughout, which sounds more like ahh-rooo.

After making the rounds of the TV morning shows, Uno will spend the
rest of today being feted at various luncheons. He will also eat steak
on a silver platter at Sardi's Restaurant in Manhattan, as is the
custom for the winner. He has even been asked to ring the opening bell
on Wall Street on Friday. And it's only just beginning.

So what can I say more, other than Beagles are the most awesomest dogs in the world.

Inter-Species Brother's Name Poll

The results from last week's poll are in and there is no clear winner.

The question was: My inter-species little brother's name should be...?
The choices were Rex, Xavier, Maximilien and Felix.
The results are:
Rex 3
Xavier 3
Maximilien 2
Felix 3

I am quite disappointed with my readership with Rex only receiving 27% of the vote.
Rex did win, well tied for first, and I will be lobbying Mama and Papa,
but it is a far cry from a majority.

Despite that, I must say I am ecstatic with the fact that 11 people voted!
A new poll record!!!
